Long Whatton’s Curriculum Principles and Purpose
General Principles
Our curriculum will deliver cultural capital, giving our children the best possible start to their education and future success. Through our curriculum our children will be able to see clear links and sequencing between different aspects of their learning. They will understand the purpose and value of their learning and see its relevance to their past, present and future. They will experience the challenge and enjoyment of learning, developing skills and demonstrating their creativity through a variety of interesting contexts. They will develop a rich and deep subject knowledge.
Enrichment
We believe that our children should enjoy learning beyond the classroom. We provide our children with on and off site subject or topic related activities that engage them in their learning. We aim for children to have at least 3 trips across the academic year and a residential opportunity for years 2-6. We regularly welcome parents and carers into school to take part in children’s learning and experiences.
Pedagogy
Our curriculum offers all of our children a memorable experience at the start of every topic. Our curriculum promotes innovation, problem solving, creativity and good communication. It enables and fosters children’s natural curiosity. It enables children to reflect on, evaluate and build on their learning.
Pupil Voice
Our curriculum encourages our children to make a positive contribution to the school and local community. Our children are encouraged to express their opinions, respectfully, on a range of different topics and issues, understanding and respecting the opinion of others. They are confident to share what they like and dislike about their learning.
Well Being
Our children are encouraged to build respectful relationships and to recognise that we are good at different things. We build their self-esteem and confidence in their abilities in a peaceful, supportive, family environment.
